BMI and Joint Health: Knees, Hips, and Body Weight

If your knees or hips hurt and your BMI is above 25, weight is part of the equation. The mechanics are not subtle — and the relief from modest weight loss is one of the best-studied effects in orthopedic medicine.

The mechanical math

Walking on level ground transmits about 4 times your body weight through your knee with each step. Climbing stairs is more like 6×. Running can hit 8×. A 10 kg weight gain translates to roughly 40 kg extra force on each knee, every step, every day.

Cumulative load explains why osteoarthritis tracks BMI so closely — by age 60, every 5 BMI points above 25 roughly doubles the lifetime risk of knee replacement.

How fast does pain respond to weight loss?

Studies of knee osteoarthritis patients show that 10% body weight loss reduces pain scores by 50% on average — a larger effect than many medications. Hip pain shows similar but slightly smaller responses.

You typically start feeling improvement after 3–5 kg of loss in adults — the load reduction kicks in immediately, even before any structural change.

Why weight loss alone is not enough

Strengthening the muscles around the joint — quadriceps for the knee, gluteus medius for the hip — reduces load on the joint surface itself. Pair weight loss with even basic strength work and the joint relief is bigger.

Low-impact movement (swimming, cycling) lets you exercise without aggravating painful joints while still creating the calorie deficit for weight loss.

When BMI is misleading for joints

Athletes with high BMI from muscle do not have the same joint risk — muscle mass actually protects joints. The risk relationship is with body fat, not BMI per se.

For most non-athletes, however, BMI is a reasonable proxy and tracking it gives you a useful early signal before joint pain shows up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the app really 100% offline?

Yes. NDT Studio apps run entirely on your device — no account, no cloud sync, no analytics. The app works exactly the same on a plane, a subway, or a remote area with no signal. Nothing about your usage is sent anywhere.

Are there hidden costs or subscriptions?

No. The app is free to download and free to use, indefinitely. There is no trial period that expires, no premium tier locking core features, and no subscription model. The price is zero from day one through forever.

Will the app drain my battery?

NDT Studio apps are deliberately lightweight. They do not run background services, do not poll for updates, and do not wake your device. Battery impact during active use is in line with any standard utility app; battery impact when not actively in use is effectively zero.
