About English Korean Dictionary
This English-Korean offline dictionary is designed for the growing community of Korean language learners worldwide. With the global popularity of K-pop, K-drama, and Korean culture, learning Korean has never been more popular.
About Korean
Korean is spoken by over 77 million people in South and North Korea. It uses the Hangul writing system, which was scientifically designed in the 15th century and is considered one of the most logical writing systems in the world.
Who is this app for? Korean learners, K-pop and K-drama fans, travelers to South Korea, business professionals.
The alphabet takes an afternoon
Hangul was designed deliberately in the 1440s to be learnable by people with no time for years of study, and that goal is still visible. The consonant shapes are schematic diagrams of the mouth — ㅁ is the outline of closed lips, ㄴ the tongue tip at the ridge behind the teeth — and aspirated consonants are formed by adding a stroke to the plain one: ㄱ becomes ㅋ, ㄷ becomes ㅌ.
Letters pack into syllable blocks rather than running in a line, which is why Korean looks superficially like Chinese while working completely differently. Most learners can read Korean aloud, slowly, after a few hours.
Two number systems, used in the same breath
Korean counts with two unrelated sets. Native Korean — 하나, 둘, 셋 — is used for counting objects, people, ages and hours, and stops at ninety-nine. Sino-Korean — 일, 이, 삼 — handles money, dates, minutes, phone numbers and anything above a hundred.
Telling the time uses both at once: 3:30 is 세 시 삼십 분, a native number for the hour and a Sino-Korean one for the minutes. Four native numbers also change shape before a counter — 하나 becomes 한, 둘 becomes 두.
Politeness is built into the verb
Korean encodes the relationship between speaker and listener in the verb ending, across several speech levels. The same statement has a plain form, a polite form and a formal one, and the choice is governed by relative age, status and closeness. There is no neutral option — you are always saying something about the relationship.
Korean has around 80 million speakers across both Koreas and a substantial diaspora.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Hangul take to learn?
Most learners can read Korean aloud slowly after two or three focused hours, with fluency following over a few weeks. It is dramatically faster than Chinese characters or Japanese kanji because it is an alphabet of twenty-four basic letters.
Why does Korean have two number systems?
One is native Korean and one was borrowed from Chinese. Native numbers count objects, people, ages and hours and stop at ninety-nine; Sino-Korean handles money, dates, minutes and everything above a hundred. Clock times use both — 세 시 삼십 분 for 3:30.
Should I learn romanisation or Hangul first?
Hangul, directly. Korean romanisation systems are inconsistent and none represents the sounds accurately, so relying on them builds habits you later have to unlearn. Since the alphabet takes an afternoon, the detour gains very little.
What are speech levels?
Korean marks the speaker-listener relationship in the verb ending, with several levels from plain to formal. The choice depends on relative age, status and closeness, and there is no neutral option — every sentence says something about the relationship.
