About Russian

Russian is spoken by over 258 million people worldwide and is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the six official UN languages.

Who is this app for? Russian language students, travelers to Russia, business professionals, translators.

The two things that make Russian hard

The alphabet is the smaller problem and it is solved in an afternoon. The trap is the handful of letters that look Latin and are not: В is v, Н is n, Р is r, С is s, У is u, Х is kh. Everything else is either already familiar or genuinely new, and new shapes are easier than false friends.

The real work is the case system. Russian nouns, adjectives and pronouns change ending according to their role in the sentence, across six cases and three genders. Книга (book) becomes книгу as a direct object, книги in the genitive, книге in the dative. A dictionary gives you the nominative; the sentence in front of you will usually contain something else, and learning to work backwards to the dictionary form is a skill in itself.

Stress is unwritten and it changes the vowels

Russian does not mark stress in ordinary writing, but stress determines how vowels are pronounced. Unstressed о reduces towards an "a" sound, so молоко (milk) is said closer to ma-la-KO. Worse, stress can move between forms of the same word, and in a few pairs it is the only difference in meaning.

This dictionary marks stress on entries, which is the single most useful thing a reference can do for a Russian learner and something you cannot recover from the spelling.

What is in it

Over 98,000 entries in both directions — the largest dictionary in this catalogue — with stress marked and multiple senses per entry. Russian is spoken by roughly 250 million people and is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as one of the six official UN languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the dictionary show where the stress falls?

Yes, entries are marked for stress. This is important because Russian does not write stress in normal text, yet it determines vowel pronunciation — unstressed о is reduced towards an a sound — and it can shift between different forms of the same word.

Can I search for an inflected form, or do I need the dictionary form?

Search works best with the dictionary form: the nominative singular for nouns, the infinitive for verbs. Russian inflection is extensive, so learning to recognise the base form of a word you meet in a sentence is part of learning the language.

Do I need to type in Cyrillic?

You can search in either direction. Searching from English needs no Cyrillic at all; searching a Russian word does require Cyrillic input, which Android and iOS both provide as a standard keyboard you can add in settings.

How large is the dictionary?

Over 98,000 entries, making it the largest in this catalogue. Coverage is strong on general and everyday vocabulary in both directions.
