About English Vietnamese Dictionary

It provides detailed definitions, example sentences, and phonetic transcriptions to help you understand and pronounce words correctly.
About Vietnamese
Vietnamese is the national language of Vietnam, spoken by over 85 million people. It is a tonal language with six distinct tones, making a reliable dictionary essential for learners.
Who is this app for? Vietnamese students, English learners, travelers to Vietnam, business professionals.
What makes Vietnamese hard for English speakers
Vietnamese grammar is unusually forgiving — no verb conjugation, no noun cases, no grammatical gender, no plurals to agree with. Nearly all the difficulty sits in pronunciation, and specifically in the six tones. The syllable ma means ghost; mà means but; má is cheek; mả is a tomb; mã is horse; mạ is a rice seedling. Same letters, six words.
The second obstacle is that a dictionary lookup only works if you have the diacritics right. Vietnamese marks tone on the vowel, and separately marks vowel quality with the circumflex in â ê ô, the horn in ơ ư, and the bar in đ. A search for tuong could be tương, tường, tưởng or tượng — four unrelated words.
What is in this dictionary
Around 88,000 entries in both directions, with tone marks and vowel diacritics reproduced exactly as they should be typed. Entries carry multiple senses rather than a single gloss, which matters for a language where one syllable frequently does several unrelated jobs.
Because the data ships inside the app, lookups work on a Hanoi street with no signal and on a plane. Nothing you search is sent anywhere.
Who uses it
The two largest groups are English speakers learning Vietnamese — often for travel, work or a Vietnamese partner's family — and Vietnamese speakers working on English, which is by some distance the bigger group. It is also used heavily by the Vietnamese diaspora, where children raised in English look up words their parents use at home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the dictionary handle Vietnamese tone marks correctly?
Yes. Entries store the full diacritics — both tone marks and vowel modifiers such as ơ, ư, ê and đ — and search matches them. This matters because tương, tường, tưởng and tượng are four different words that differ only in their marks.
Does it work for both Northern and Southern Vietnamese?
The written entries are standard Vietnamese, which is shared across regions. Pronunciation differs — Southern speakers typically merge the hỏi and ngã tones, and some consonants differ — but the spelling in the dictionary is the same one used in newspapers and schools throughout Vietnam.
How many words does it contain?
Around 88,000 entries across both directions. Coverage is strongest on everyday and general vocabulary; highly technical and specialist terminology is thinner, as it is in most bilingual dictionaries of this size.
Is it really usable with no internet at all?
Yes. The entire dictionary is stored on the device at install time. There is no lookup server, no account, and no network request when you search — which is also why your searches cannot be logged anywhere.
