BMI and body fat percentage often get treated as competing answers to the same question. They are not. They measure different things, and which one is more useful depends on what you are trying to learn about your body.
What BMI measures
BMI is a ratio of weight to height. That is it. It does not distinguish muscle from fat from bone from water. It is a screening number that correlates with body fat in most adults — but the correlation is loose.
The strength of BMI is that anyone can calculate it in seconds with no equipment. The weakness is exactly the same: simplicity comes at the cost of resolution.
What body fat percentage measures
Body fat percentage is the share of your weight that is fat tissue. The healthy range is roughly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women, with athletic ranges lower.
You cannot calculate body fat from a scale and tape — it requires measurement: skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance (smart scales), DEXA scan, or hydrostatic weighing. Methods vary widely in accuracy: DEXA is the gold standard, smart scales are notoriously variable.
When each one is the right tool
Use BMI when you want a fast, free check on weight-related health risk and you do not have access to other measurements. The CDC and WHO use it precisely because it travels well across populations.
Use body fat percentage when you are training for a sport, building muscle, or have a specific composition goal. The number directly answers what you care about; BMI does not.
Combine them when you can
If you have access to a smart scale or your gym offers a body composition scan, track both numbers. Disagreements between them tell you something. A high BMI with low body fat means muscle. A normal BMI with high body fat ("skinny fat") means low muscle and is its own health flag.

Frequently asked questions
Is the app really 100% offline?
Yes. NDT Studio apps run entirely on your device — no account, no cloud sync, no analytics. The app works exactly the same on a plane, a subway, or a remote area with no signal. Nothing about your usage is sent anywhere.
Are there hidden costs or subscriptions?
No. The app is free to download and free to use, indefinitely. There is no trial period that expires, no premium tier locking core features, and no subscription model. The price is zero from day one through forever.
Will the app drain my battery?
NDT Studio apps are deliberately lightweight. They do not run background services, do not poll for updates, and do not wake your device. Battery impact during active use is in line with any standard utility app; battery impact when not actively in use is effectively zero.
