About English Armenian Dictionary

This English-Armenian dictionary provides offline access to over 7,700 words. Armenian has its own unique alphabet, and this dictionary helps bridge the gap between English and Armenian for learners and travelers.

About Armenian

Armenian is spoken by about 6.7 million people worldwide. It has its own unique alphabet of 38 letters, created in 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots. It is the official language of Armenia.

Who is this app for? Armenian learners, travelers to Armenia, Armenian diaspora, language enthusiasts.

An alphabet designed for one language

Armenian has its own alphabet, created in the early fifth century and attributed to Mesrop Mashtots. It was designed specifically for Armenian rather than adapted from a neighbour's script, and it is still in use essentially unchanged — one of the older continuously used writing systems in the world.

It runs to 38 letters and is written left to right. Because it is unique to Armenian, there is no partial credit from knowing Greek or Cyrillic: the shapes are entirely new. The compensation is that the fit between letters and sounds is good, so once learned it is reliable.

Eastern and Western Armenian

This is the practical decision to make before you start. Eastern Armenian is the standard of Armenia and of the Armenian community in Iran. Western Armenian is the standard of the diaspora descended from communities in the Ottoman Empire — Lebanon, Syria, France, the United States.

They differ in pronunciation, notably in how the stop consonants are realised, and in some grammar and vocabulary. Speakers of one understand the other with effort. Learners should choose according to the community they will actually be speaking with.

An Indo-European isolate

Armenian is Indo-European but forms a branch of its own, with no close relatives. So while it shares deep ancestry with English, Greek and Hindi, there is no sibling language to lean on, and the vocabulary is almost entirely unguessable.

Armenian is spoken by around 6.7 million people, with a large diaspora that in many places outnumbers speakers in Armenia itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was the Armenian alphabet created?

In the early fifth century, traditionally attributed to Mesrop Mashtots. It was purpose-built for Armenian rather than adapted from another script, and it remains in use essentially unchanged with 38 letters.

What is the difference between Eastern and Western Armenian?

Eastern Armenian is the standard in Armenia and Iran; Western Armenian is the diaspora standard, descended from Ottoman-era communities. They differ in pronunciation — particularly the stop consonants — and in some grammar and vocabulary. Choose by the community you will speak with.

Is Armenian related to Turkish or Persian?

No. Armenian is Indo-European and forms its own branch with no close relatives, while Turkish is Turkic. Persian is Indo-European too but not closely related. Centuries of contact have left loanwords in both directions.

Do I need to learn the alphabet to use the dictionary?

You can search from English without it. Searching an Armenian word requires the Armenian script, which both Android and iOS provide as a keyboard you can add in settings.
