About Estonian
Estonian is spoken by about 1.1 million people and is the official language of Estonia. It is closely related to Finnish and belongs to the Uralic language family, making it quite different from most European languages.
Who is this app for? Travelers to Estonia, Estonian language learners, students, expats in the Baltics.
Three lengths, not two
Estonian's most distinctive feature is a three-way length contrast. Most languages that use length at all have short and long; Estonian has short, long and overlong, and all three distinguish meaning.
The textbook set is lina (linen), linna (of the city) and linna (into the city) — the last two spelled identically and separated in speech only by degree of length. This is genuinely hard for learners, because English uses length as a by-product of stress rather than as a meaningful contrast in its own right.
Related to Finnish, but do not assume
Estonian is Uralic and closely related to Finnish, close enough that the family resemblance is obvious in vocabulary and structure. It is not close enough for free comprehension, and there are false friends between the two that catch speakers of either.
It has fourteen cases, no grammatical gender, no articles, and no future tense — the same broad profile as Finnish. Estonian has largely lost the consonant gradation that makes Finnish lookup so awkward, which is one respect in which it is the easier of the two.
What is in it
Bidirectional entries covering everyday and general vocabulary. Estonian has roughly 1.1 million speakers, making it one of the smaller official languages of the European Union, and it is the state language of Estonia.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the three-way length distinction in Estonian?
Estonian distinguishes short, long and overlong sounds, and all three carry meaning. Lina, linna (of the city) and linna (into the city) differ by length alone, with the last two spelled identically. English speakers find this hard because English uses length only as a by-product of stress.
If I speak Finnish, can I understand Estonian?
You will recognise a great deal of structure and vocabulary, but not enough for free comprehension, and there are false friends between the two languages that mislead speakers of either.
How many cases does Estonian have?
Fourteen. As in Finnish and Hungarian, most of them do the work English assigns to prepositions rather than representing unfamiliar grammatical concepts.
Does the dictionary work without an internet connection?
Yes. Everything is stored on the device, which matters for a language you are most likely to be using while travelling in Estonia.
