About Greek
Greek is spoken by about 13.5 million people and is the official language of Greece and Cyprus. It has the longest documented history of any living language, spanning over 3,400 years.

You already know a third of the alphabet
Anyone who has met pi, delta, sigma or omega in a maths or science class has a real head start on Greek. The catch is that modern Greek does not pronounce several of those letters the way a lecture does.
Four in particular: β is v, not b — so πρόβλημα is próvlima. δ is the th of "this". η is ee, despite being called eta. And υ is also ee, despite being called upsilon.
Everything is "ee"
Modern Greek pronounces η, ι and υ, plus the combinations ει and οι, all as the same ee sound. The merger is called iotacism, and it has an awkward consequence: hearing a word does not tell you how to spell it, because one sound corresponds to five spellings.
Greek schoolchildren spend real classroom time on this, and it is the main reason a learner needs a dictionary rather than trusting their ear.
The accent tells you what Russian will not
Every multi-syllable Greek word is written with an accent marking the stressed syllable: καλημέρα, ευχαριστώ, Ελλάδα. This is genuinely helpful — unlike Russian, Greek tells you exactly where the stress falls, and stress matters more for being understood than individual vowel quality does.
Greek has around 13 million speakers and is the official language of Greece and Cyprus. It also has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, which is why so much English scientific vocabulary is built from it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is modern Greek pronounced like the Greek in maths and science?
No. The pronunciation used for mathematical symbols reflects a reconstruction of ancient Greek. In modern Greek, beta is v, delta is the th of this, and both eta and upsilon are pronounced ee.
What is iotacism?
The historical merger of several once-distinct vowels into a single ee sound. In modern Greek η, ι and υ, plus the combinations ει and οι, are all pronounced ee — which makes listening easier and spelling considerably harder.
Why does sigma have two lowercase forms?
Greek writes sigma as ς at the end of a word and σ elsewhere. The distinction is purely positional and the sound is identical, so seeing ς is a reliable signal that you have reached the end of a word.
Does the dictionary show where the stress falls?
Yes, because Greek orthography marks it on every multi-syllable word. This is a real advantage over languages like Russian, which leave stress unwritten.
