About Italian

Italian is spoken by over 67 million people and is the official language of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It is known for its musical quality and rich cultural heritage.

Who is this app for? Italian learners, travelers to Italy, language students, professionals.

You can read Italian aloud before you understand it

Italian spelling is close to a one-to-one match with pronunciation, which is rare and enormously helpful. Once you know that c before i or e is a "ch" sound, ch is a hard k, gli is a palatal l and gn is like the ny in canyon, you can pronounce essentially any written word correctly. There are no silent letters to speak of and no English-style spelling chaos.

Double consonants are separate words

This is the one pronunciation feature that genuinely changes meaning, and English speakers consistently under-produce it. A doubled consonant is held noticeably longer:

capello is a hair, cappello is a hat. Nono is ninth, nonno is a grandfather. Pala is a shovel, palla is a ball. Casa is a house, cassa is a crate or a cash desk. Sete is thirst, sette is seven. If a listener looks confused, lengthening the consonant more than feels natural is usually the fix.

Plurals change the ending, not add a letter

Italian does not form plurals with -s. It changes the final vowel: libro becomes libri, casa becomes case, studente becomes studenti. Anyone arriving from Spanish or French has to actively suppress the reflex to add an s.

Italian has around 67 million speakers and is official in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and parts of Switzerland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do double consonants matter in Italian?

Because they distinguish words. A doubled consonant is held longer, and the difference separates pairs like capello (hair) and cappello (hat), or nono (ninth) and nonno (grandfather). English speakers habitually under-produce them, which causes genuine ambiguity.

Is Italian pronunciation predictable from spelling?

Unusually so. Once you know a handful of rules — c before i or e, ch, gli, gn — you can pronounce almost any written Italian word correctly. There are effectively no silent letters.

Is Italian easy if I already speak Spanish?

Very much so — the vocabularies overlap heavily. The traps are the false friends: burro is butter in Italian and a donkey in Spanish, salire means to go up rather than to go out, and caldo means hot rather than broth.

How do Italian plurals work?

By changing the final vowel rather than adding -s: libro becomes libri, casa becomes case, studente becomes studenti. Speakers of Spanish, French or English have to consciously break the habit of adding an s.
