About Macedonian

Macedonian is spoken by about 2 million people and is the official language of North Macedonia. It uses the Cyrillic alphabet and is part of the South Slavic language family.

Who is this app for? Travelers to North Macedonia, Macedonian language learners, Balkan travelers.

The Slavic language that dropped its cases

Macedonian is South Slavic, and it is unusual in the family for having largely abandoned the case system. Where Croatian, Serbian and Czech inflect nouns across seven cases, Macedonian relies on prepositions and word order much as English does.

For an English speaker this removes the single largest obstacle to learning a Slavic language. If you have tried Russian or Polish and found the case tables punishing, Macedonian is a genuinely gentler entry point into the family.

Definite articles attached to the end

In exchange, Macedonian does something no other Slavic language does: it has definite articles, and they attach as suffixes. Куќа is a house; куќата is the house.

There are three of them, distinguished by proximity — one neutral, one marking something near the speaker, one marking something distant. That is a distinction English handles with "the", "this" and "that" as separate words, folded here into the noun ending.

Macedonian also has no infinitive. Where English says "I want to read", Macedonian constructs it with a subordinate clause instead.

What is in it

Bidirectional entries in Cyrillic, which Macedonian uses with its own letters — ѓ, ќ, џ, љ, њ, ѕ, ј. Macedonian has roughly two million speakers and is the official language of North Macedonia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Macedonian have grammatical cases?

Largely not, which makes it unusual among Slavic languages. It relies on prepositions and word order much as English does, removing the biggest obstacle English speakers face with Russian, Polish or Croatian.

What are the three definite articles?

Macedonian attaches definite articles as suffixes — куќа is a house, куќата is the house — and has three, distinguished by proximity: neutral, near the speaker, and distant. English handles that distinction with separate words: the, this and that.

Is Macedonian Cyrillic the same as Russian?

No. Macedonian has its own letters including ѓ, ќ, ѕ, џ, љ, њ and ј, and omits several Russian ones. Knowing Russian Cyrillic helps but you will meet unfamiliar characters.

Is Macedonian a good first Slavic language?

For an English speaker, arguably yes. The absence of a case system removes the steepest part of the usual learning curve while still giving you the vocabulary and structure of the South Slavic family.
