About Ukrainian

Ukrainian is spoken by over 40 million people and is the official language of Ukraine. It uses the Cyrillic alphabet and has a rich literary tradition dating back centuries.

Who is this app for? Ukrainian learners, travelers to Ukraine, diaspora communities, aid workers.

Ukrainian is not a variety of Russian

It is worth stating plainly, because the assumption is common and wrong. Ukrainian is a distinct East Slavic language with its own literary history, and while it shares roots with Russian it is closer in several respects to Polish and Belarusian. Speakers of one do not automatically understand the other.

The alphabets differ too. Ukrainian has letters Russian does not — і, ї, є and ґ — and lacks Russian's ы, ъ and э. Ukrainian и and і are separate letters with separate sounds, and the apostrophe is a working part of the orthography rather than punctuation.

What the grammar asks of you

Seven cases, including a vocative that is in genuine everyday use for addressing people — an extra form Russian has largely lost. Three genders, and adjectives that agree with the noun in gender, number and case. Verbs come in aspectual pairs, one for a completed action and one for an ongoing or repeated one, and choosing between them is a habit rather than a rule you can look up.

As with any heavily inflected language, the practical dictionary skill is working backwards from the form in front of you to the nominative singular or the infinitive that the entry is filed under.

What is in it

Bidirectional entries covering everyday and general vocabulary. Ukrainian is spoken by tens of millions of people and is the state language of Ukraine, with substantial communities in Canada, Poland, the United States and across Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ukrainian the same as Russian?

No. They are separate East Slavic languages, and Ukrainian is in some respects closer to Polish and Belarusian than to Russian. The alphabets differ as well — Ukrainian has і, ї, є and ґ, and lacks Russian ы, ъ and э.

Can I use a Russian keyboard to type Ukrainian?

Not reliably, because the letter sets are different. Both Android and iOS include a Ukrainian keyboard you can add in settings, and it is worth using rather than trying to approximate with Russian.

How many cases does Ukrainian have?

Seven, including a vocative case used routinely when addressing someone. Nouns, adjectives and pronouns all inflect, so the form you meet in a sentence is often not the form filed in the dictionary.

Does the dictionary work offline?

Yes. All entries are stored on the device, so lookups work with no connection at all.
