About Turn Off Screen
Turn Off Screen is a lightweight utility app that lets you turn off your phone screen with a single tap. It helps preserve your power button from wear and tear, saves battery life, and is especially useful for users with broken or hard-to-reach power buttons. Trusted by over 1 million users daily.
Why an app to do what a button already does
The power button is usually the first mechanical part of a phone to fail. It is pressed dozens of times a day for years, and on many devices replacing it means replacing a whole flex cable or mainboard assembly. Turning the screen off in software means the button stops taking that wear.
That is the main reason people install this, but it is not the only one. Users with a button that has already failed use it to keep an otherwise-working phone in service. Users with limited hand strength or dexterity find a tap on the screen easier than a firm press on a thin side button. And anyone who mounts a phone in a case, cradle or armband where the power button is covered needs another way to switch the display off.
How it works, and the permission it needs
Android does not let an ordinary app switch the display off. The only supported route is the Device Administrator API, so the app asks to be registered as a device admin and then calls the system lock function. That is the same mechanism a corporate management profile uses, which is why the permission prompt sounds more serious than the app is.
It is worth being clear about the consequence: while the app holds device admin, Android blocks the normal uninstall path. To remove it you first revoke device admin in Settings, then uninstall as usual. The app cannot read your data, and the permission is used for exactly one call.
What it does not do
It locks the screen rather than merely dimming it, so unlocking works exactly as it normally does — your PIN, pattern or biometric is unchanged. It does not root the device, does not run a persistent background service beyond what the widget needs, and does not change any other system setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it need device administrator permission?
Because Android reserves the ability to turn the display off for device administrators. There is no lower-privilege API that does this. The app registers as an admin solely to call the system lock function, and it uses no other administrator capability.
Why can I not uninstall it the normal way?
Android blocks uninstalling any app that currently holds device administrator rights. Go to Settings, find Security or Device admin apps, revoke the permission for Turn Off Screen, and it will then uninstall like any other app.
Does turning the screen off this way save battery?
It saves the same battery as pressing the power button — the display is genuinely off, not dimmed. The app itself is very small and does not poll or run heavy background work, so it does not meaningfully add to consumption.
Is there an iOS version?
No. iOS does not expose any API that lets a third-party app switch the display off, so this is an Android-only app and cannot be ported.
